Histopathology

In this department we performed "the anatomical study of the microscopic structure of tissues." to analyze and evaluate disease states at a cellular level by means of light microscopy, histochemistry and immunochemistry. Tissues removed from patients, usually during surgery, are sent to our histopathology department to be examined and interpreted by an anatomic pathologist. Most surgical tissues are examined and described macroscopically (called "grossing") and processed into blocks of paraffin wax. These blocks are sectioned into pieces from 3-10 microns thick, placed on a microscope slide, stained and read microscopically by the pathologist. The Histopathology services are centralized at the Headquarters laboratory.

Our laboratory is fully equipped with automated processors and specialized equipment such as automated cryostat and microtome for paraffin histology and frozen sections. The department has the capacity to handle all surgical biopsies. Frozen section diagnosis is available by arrangement with our pathologist.
